Help a Friend
Trying to quit smoking
isn't easy. Teens who are trying to quit often say that having
a friend to turn to for support helps them stay away from tobacco.
So why not Help-A-Friend and help them quit? Print out the contract
below, and fill it out and sign it with your friend.
Try to help your friend
stick to the contract by offering emotional support - spend time with them, help them stay occupied with things other than
smoking, and give them encouragement and praise for their efforts.
Your friend may want to
turn their cigarettes and paraphernalia over to you or to an adult for
disposal to reduce temptation. You may want to provide a small
amount of sugarless candy or gum, drinking straws to chew on, or a small
ball to squeeze.
For more information and
help for your friend, visit Cessation Resources and Staying Smoke Free for more
information on things like ways to say no when someone offers you a
cigarette and things to do when you get the urge to smoke. You may even
want to print out some of the info there and
give it to your friend. Just remember - your emotional support can
be a big factor in helping your friend stay quit!
